Road Hump Myths

The road will be quieter: 1. The noise of people braking as they hit road humps, the sound of axles and suspension over road humps, and the sound of engines accelerating away from road humps creates far more noise and is far more intrusive than the background hum created by a normal flat road. 2. Modern tarmac is considerably quieter than most of the tarmac on Hertfordshire roads. If the money was spent on resurfacing the short stretch through the whole village (which needs doing anyway but isn't being done) then traffic noise would be massively reduced. However the roads are not being resurfaced.

There will be less polution: The braking and accelerating created by so many road humps will increase pollution - more heat and more carbon monoxide.

Less people will travel through the village: Due to the layout and position of Ickleford and surrounding roads no-one goes through Ickleford that doesn't have to. The detour is far too long and therefore Ickleford cannot be described as a rat-run.

They make roads safer: In fact they create problems for cyclists, motor-cyclists, and horse-riders. They are immensely dangerous in icy weather. NOTE you can't snow-plough a stretch of road containing humps which is now the preferred strategy before gritting.
